Parkour : the Art of Yamakasi

If you have watched the movie B13, realized by Luc Besson, you already know why Parkour attracts so many young people. This unique discipline stands out for its blend of athleticism, creativity, and fearless exploration. But what exactly is Parkour, and why has it gained such popularity over the years among youth and teenagers?

French origins, free spirits…

Parkour, often referred to as the "art of movement," is a training discipline born in the core of the Parisian suburbs in the 1990s. Inspired by military training, David Belle and his friends, called The Yamakasi group, developed this new discipline using urban environments to challenge their strength, agility and adaptability.  Parkour is all about developing the physical and mental attributes required to overcome obstacles in the present moment. Over the years, it has gained worldwide recognition. Its influence has extended to various forms of media, with Hollywood movies, documentaries, and viral videos showcasing the discipline's impressive and acrobatic movements.

The Freedom of a Discipline

At its core, parkour is more than just a physical activity; it's a way of life. It is a discipline that holds several key principles: efficiency, fluidity, adaptability and mindfulness.
In fact, Parkour prioritizes the quickest and most direct way to navigate obstacles. The goal is to reduce wasted energy and effort. To do so, movements should flow seamlessly from one to the next. Practitioners strive to maintain a state of constant motion, adapting to their surroundings. Parkour encourages individuals to adapt to their environment, no matter how unpredictable. It is a fundamental skill in parkour. And finally, it requires intense mental focus and awareness. Any Parkour adepts need to assess their surroundings, anticipate challenges, and make split-second decisions.

Why are pre-teens and teenagers drawn to Parkour?

Because Parkour allows individuals to express themselves through movement, without any kind of strict and rigid rules, pre-teens and teenagers fall quickly in love with the sport. It's a form of self-expression that goes beyond traditional boundaries.

All parents want to help their kids to grow confident in all aspects of their life. The thrill of overcoming physical and mental challenges is a fundamental aspect of Parkour. Each obstacle conquered boosts confidence and self-esteem.

Parkour is also the nest of community and camaraderie: it fosters a sense of community among its practitioners. Many parkour communities provide support, encouragement, and a shared passion for movement.

Safety and Training

Parkour is physically demanding and carries inherent risks. It's essential for beginners to start with proper training and under the guidance of experienced instructors. Learning the fundamentals of Parkour, such as landing techniques, rolls, and precision jumps, is crucial to ensure safety and minimize the risk of injury.
